About
I am an award-winning writer/editor with 15 years of professional journalism experience. My professional career also has included work in other creative fields, having worked for several years as a skateboard artist in a Cirque du Soleil show in New York City and as a scenic artist on movie sets in the New England area.
I received my start as a writer soon after graduation from Providence College, interning at the college’s Publications Office. I then moved on to several newspaper staff positions, including eight years as a staff reporter at The Newport Daily News in Newport, RI, and as a copy editor/page designer at The Herald News in Fall River, MA.
A call from a casting agent at Cirque du Soleil eventually changed my career path for several years. I ended up skateboarding for four years in a seasonal Cirque show at Madison Square Garden and spent the other six months of the year working as a scenic artist on such movies as "Shutter Island," "The Town" and "Moonrise Kingdom."
I'm a versatile writer who loves feature and magazine writing. I have a proven track record of producing clear, concise copy for print and electronic media, and an outstanding ability to develop and execute communication plans for a variety of audiences.
As a reporter, I have received the following newspaper awards:
• 1st place award from the Rhode Island Press Association in the news series category in 2003 for a series examining the United States' loss of the America's Cup in 1983 and its effect on Newport and the sport of sailing.
• 1st place award from the New England Newspaper Association for enterprise reporting in 2002 for a series chronicling the rise of housing costs in Newport County.
• 1st place award from the Rhode Island Press Association for investigative/analytical reporting in 2001 for a series focusing on the financial mismanagement and near-demise of the Newport Creamery, a Rhode Island-based restaurant chain.
